Southport Swimming Club is powered by people.
Behind every training session, competition and club event is a team of volunteers giving their time, skills and enthusiasm to help our swimmers thrive. There are lots of ways to get involved – whether you can help regularly, occasionally, poolside or behind the scenes.
You don't need to be a swimming expert or have previous experience. We will help you find a role that suits you and support you with any training, qualifications or safeguarding requirements you need.
Become a Swimming Official
Officials are essential to competitive swimming and it's a fantastic way to experience the action from poolside.
Many parents start by becoming a Timekeeper, before choosing to progress through the officiating pathway. Opportunities include:
Timekeeper – Record swimmers' race times and support the smooth running of competitions.
Judge – Develop your knowledge of competitive swimming and help ensure races are conducted fairly and consistently.
Starter – Take responsibility for starting races and ensuring swimmers receive a fair start.
Referee – For those who progress further through the officiating pathway, referees oversee the running of the competition and the team of officials.
Full training is available, so you don't need any previous experience. The Club will support and pay for the required training and qualifications.
Support our Swimmers Poolside
Our Team Managers and poolside volunteers play an important role in supporting swimmers at galas and competitions.
From helping swimmers get to the right race at the right time to supporting the wider coaching team, these roles are a brilliant way to become more involved with the Club and experience competitions from a completely different perspective.
Some roles require specific Swim England training, safeguarding training and an appropriate DBS check. Where these are required, Southport Swimming Club will arrange and cover the cost of them.
Help Run & Develop our Club
There is plenty that happens away from the pool too.
Our volunteers help with everything from organising events and competitions to fundraising, communications, administration and supporting the work of our Committee.
Whether you have professional skills you could share, a new idea you'd like to bring to the Club, or simply a little time to give, we'd love to hear from you. You don't have to make a huge commitment to make a difference.
Develop New Skills
Volunteering isn't just about what you can give – it's also a great opportunity to learn something new.
You can gain recognised training and qualifications, build confidence and experience, meet new people and become a bigger part of the swimming community. Swim England provides a range of development pathways for volunteers, including officials, Team Managers and other club roles.
Southport Swimming Club will pay for any required training, qualifications and safeguarding checks associated with your volunteer role.
